Alessi MG33, teapot in 18/10 stainless steel mirror polished. Handle and knob in PA, light Blue. Designer: Michael Graves.
Naoto Fukazawa's characteristic minimalist rigour is appearing once again with "Cha", a refined object that is both a Kettle and a Teapot, thanks to its structural detail. "Cha" - from the Japanese word for tea - is fitted with a large and elegant filter for the tea leaves.
My lovely Alessi with its melodic whistle, whistling away on my 1947 gas range. Such a lovely Christmas, this year.

The 16th edition of the International Design Yearbook presents an array of domestic designs from around the world. This year's selection has been made by Italian designer Michele De Lucchi who has grouped the objects into categories that reflect current developments in design, such as home-office furniture; the work of leading architects, ranging from Norman Foster and David Chipperfield to Zaha Hadid and Kazuyo Sejima; new treatments of traditional forms like wickerware; minimalist designs; and innovations from leading companies including Apple, Philips, Sharp and Siemens. Seeing them as extensions of modern living space, De Lucchi has also chosen to include vehicles and concept cars this year.
The research focuses on a cluster of occurrences that exemplify significant, transformative intersections between architecture and design. Concentrating on a single media per chapter---a conference, magazine, product, model, software, period, environment and debate---and an altered aspect of architecture---its milieu, status, code, practice, style, expertise, specialization, or discourse---the successive trajectories reveal a quantitative and qualitative subsumption of architecture by design across a global scale. In this context, the dissertation argues that architecture is advantageously de-disciplining into a species of design.
But could the tea kettle be topped? Susan Spencer talks with Donald Strum, who in 1984 designed the Alessi Whistling Bird Tea Kettle, which has since sold over a million units.
