Product Description

Yixing clay is originated from the region near the city of Yixing in Jiangsu province, China. Zisha is one of the several distinct types of Yixing clay used to make stoneware. The stoneware has a purple-red-brown color. The finished stoneware, which is used for teawares and other small items, are usually red or brown in color. Zisha is a mixture of kaolin, quartz and mica, with a high content of iron oxide. It is mined principally at Huanglongshan and Zhaozhuangshan and has a somewhat sandy texture. The process of preparing the clay is lengthy and was traditionally regarded as a trade secret. Typical firing temperature is between 1100C - 1200C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Craftsmanship dates back to the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) when Yixing clay was first mined around Lake Taihu in China. From the 17th century on, the Yixing wares were commonly exported to Europe. They are known as Zisha ware, and are typically unglazed. The clays used for the Yixing wares are very cohesive and can be formed coil forming, slab forming or most commonly slip casting. The clays can also be formed by throwing. The most famous wares made with Yixing clay are Yixing clay teapots. Yixing teawares are pricy because of the lengthy process of preparing the clay and their unglazed surfaces absorb traces of the beverage, creating a more complex flavor. It's recommended that Yixing teawares should never be washed using detergents, but rather with water only.

Weekend-Long DIY Festival Wedding

Zack and May’s wedding was a weekend-long affair. They invited their friends and family to stay with them at the venue from Friday-Sunday and everyone pitched in to help. “We wanted to have a mini-festival where everyone was part of the event, rather than turning up to a stage-managed thing”, the groom told me. “Most people stayed on-site in rooms or treehouses. Everyone came up on the Friday to help decorate the venue, and we had the Proper Pizza Company , who built two brick pizza ovens in the courtyard, to feed the helpers. Everyone contributed to the day, and many stayed until Monday. On Sunday we woke up early and cooked a huge roast for everyone who stayed over. The wedding was held at West Lexham Manor in Norfolk. “We heard about the venue through a friend”, he continued. “We were able to do lots of DIY and make them place our own. We had custom printed table runners with cartoons us done by friends and pom pom sheep name holders with top hats. The tables were identified by posters of our top five favourite films and the ceiling was decorated with dried flowers, red and white paper lanterns and giant tissue-paper flowers. We also had strings of lights and lots of flowers in vases to teapots. Source: Rock n Roll Bride

No Stamp Act Teapot
No Stamp Act Teapot
This teapot was made in England about 1766-1770, possibly by the Cockpit Hill Factory, Derby, England. Inscribed on one side of the teapot is “No Stamp Act” and on the other is “America, Liberty Restored,” both within flowerheads and stylized scrolling leaftips in black. The cover is painted with a matching border. Teapots such as this were made for sale to the American market soon after the 1766 repeal of the hated Stamp Act, passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. The Stamp Act required American colonists to pay a tax on all printed materials—from documents to playing cards. This was the first direct tax on the American colonies and provoked an immediate and violent response throughout the colonies. The Stamp Act and ensuing Stamp Act Crisis were crucial to the shaping of the political landscape in the U.S. According to historian Gordon Wood, the colonists’ response to the Stamp Act emphasized “the suffrage itself as a basic prerequisite of representation—an...
Teapot from the Burns' household
Teapot from the Burns' household
This teapot, in the Romantic style, was used by the Robert Burns household during the time they lived in Burns House, Dumfries. Jean Armour, the poet's widow, continued to live in the family home following his death in 1796. She remained there for the rest of her life and by the time of her own death in 1834, the house had become a place of pilgrimage. Relics of Robert Burns, Jean Armour Burns and their household were treasured and preserved. Part of the attraction of tea drinking lay in the beautiful and delicate equipment it required. With the rise of the Romantic Movement in the 1820s potteries began producing flamboyant designs with swaggering, curving shapes. Although the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China, it was not until the mid 17th century that it first appeared in Britain. Portuguese and Dutch traders were the first to import it, but as it gained in popularity, the sale of ale and gin declined, and so did government tax revenue....
