Product Description

This beautiful teapot comes from a collaboration between two artisans: David Birch, pioneering ceramic designer and director of London Pottery Company, and Kaffe Fassett, a renowned textile artist whose lively, colorful designs have delighted admirers for decades. The result is a teapot that displays both artists’ expertise in clear detail, while bringing their disciplines together into a complete, unified piece. The teapot, with its gently geometric form, is a thing of beauty in itself. Add Fassett’s playful, folkloric pattern into the mix, and form and function become one: the sloping sides act as canvas for the vividly symmetrical motif. The collection includes six of Fassett’s unique designs. Each is combined with a subtle glaze, which has itself been carefully selected to complement and enhance the detail of the wrap-around textile-based pattern. The teapot features a built-in stainless steel filter with a fine mesh that provides exceptional brewing. The hinged lid and wide handle add ease and comfort, while Birch's perfected dripless spout make for the perfect pour. This 4-cup teapot makes an excellent Mother's Day gift, Christmas gift, housewarming gift or birthday gift.

The makings of a teapot

I tried a Mishima technique, of carving the design, applying underglaze, then scraping away the glaze which would remain in the carved grooves. I didn't have any underglaze to use, so used some Mayco designer liner glaze, which is pretty stable. I need to practice much more on this technique, but for my first try, I learned a lot. I do plan to go back and smooth a bit more of the surface around the bee design. Source: Alchemy of Clay

Artist Statement The teapot – in the historical procession of all ceramic vessels – has had a very short time of existence. Tea head been brewed for several thousand years in large cauldrons or individually by the cup, but it wasn’t until the 1500s in the vicinity of Yixing, China that the first evidence of teapots were made (by Buddhiist monks, no less). Even at the onset, teapot design wasn’t taken seriously. The earliest examples had a trompe l’oeil feel to them; looking like a melon, a wood stump, a bundle of bamboo or tied-up sack. The legacy of the teapot was not to be just a beverage brewer, but also have a sculptural and presentational presence while doing it. The present-day teapot has evolved into a ceramic artist’s subject, very similar to what a landscape or a portrait is to a painter. The function must be recognized for the form’s aesthetic to be revealed. I treat the creation of a teapot as a design project; a form-follows-function invention with self-imposed...
