I should start with a warning as this month’s blog is a bit longer than usual as I have included a few non scone photos for a couple of the venues I have visited as they have been rather special. A few weeks ago Davide tweeted about an Italian flavoured afternoon tea which included scones with (his beloved) nutella at the Baglioni Hotel London. The hotel is one in a small, exclusive chain of luxury hotels owned by an Italian family. It’s located opposite Kensington Gardens and very close to Kensington Palace and it’s their only branch in Britain. Baglioni Hotel. We ordered their traditional afternoon tea which comes with an Italian twist and it arrived attractively presented on a three tier cake stand. On the lower tier were a selection of finger sandwiches and my vegetarian ones were served separately. As well as the more traditional smoke salmon, egg and chicken sandwiches, there were some with Italian influence such as cucumber and ricotta cheese. However everyone’s favourite was the The large fruit and plain scones were served warm. They were accompanied with dishes of strawberry jam, clotted cream and nutella, a chocolate hazelnut spread, which were all quickly replenished. I am sorry to say I’m not a fan of nutella so no one was more surprised than me to discover that the combination of scones, clotted cream and nutella is utterly fantastic. It was extremely delicious, the scones had the perfect texture crunchy on the outside with fluffy soft interior and the topping combination worked well as they weren’t too sweet. Salt glazing, with its distinctive "orange peel" surface, has long attracted both ceramicists and collectors. In his new book, well-known potter Phil Rogers looks at all the aspects of this very special glazing technique. Salt Glazing covers the history of salt glazing and the technical considerations—particularly kilns—that set this form of glazing apart from all other studio ceramics. Rogers also showcases the work of such leading salt glaze artists as Byron Temple, Jeff Oestrich, and Hans and Birgette Borjenson. Beautifully illustrated, Salt Glazing is a must for students, professional potters, and collectors of studio ceramics who enjoy the wonderful surface textures this popular medium makes possible.
Covering historical as well as contemporary pottery, this book presents both philosophical and practical experiences from the 43-year-pottery-making-career of Robin Hopper, one of America's most recognized ceramic artists.
