Time For Tea

Afternoon tea, the perfect British pass time. If ever there's a rainy day, put the kettle on. Any problem big or small - a nice cup of tea will make it better. Tea has been a firm favourite with us Brits since the 18th century, and we have the world's greatest tea consumption per capita. To celebrate our love for the beloved hot beverage, this week - Monday 10th to Sunday 16th August - it is National Afternoon Tea Week. Between 1720 and 1750 the imports of tea to Britain through the British East India Company more than quadrupled, making it a highly valuable item to trade. Again, between 1872 and 1884 the supply of tea to the British Empire increased with the expansion of the railway to the east. From 1884 onwards, due to it's growing popularity, the prices dropped and the drink thus became a choice not only for the upper classes but for people of all backgrounds to enjoy. London became the centre of the international tea trade and with this came a large increase in the demand for porcelain from tea cups, pots and saucers. At Alfies we have a number of dealers who specialise in fine china, oriental porcelain, silver teapots and everything in between. 19th & 20th Century Furniture, Lighting & Decoratives. Teapot!!!
Teapot!!!
A teapot is a vessel used for steeping tea leaves or an herbal mix in boiling or near-boiling water, and for serving the resulting infusion which is called tea. Dry tea may be available either in tea bags or as loose tea, in which case a tea infuser or tea strainer may be of some assistance, either to hold the leaves as they steep or to catch the leaves inside the teapot when the tea is poured. Teapots usually have an opening with a lid at their top, where the dry tea and hot water are added, a handle for holding by hand and a spout through which the tea is served. Some teapots have a strainer built-in on the inner edge of the spout. A small hole in the lid is necessary for air access inside to stop the spout from dripping and splashing when tea is poured. In modern times, a thermal cover called a tea cosy may be used to enhance the steeping or to prevent the contents of the teapot from cooling too rapidly. Courtesy - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teapot
Aluminium teapot
Aluminium teapot
This teapot belonged to a family who lived in Musselburgh. During the 1960s it would have been a stylish new addition to any kitchen. This is a blue anodised aluminium teapot with Bakelite fittings. A makers mark is incised onto the base of the teapot and reads, 'BRITISH MADE, DIAMOND'. Aluminium kitchen ware became readily available in the 1950s, as technology to produce the metal improved dramatically throughout World War II. Not only was aluminium ware affordable, it was also lighter than the iron pans that people had been using previously. Accession number - 2001.342
