Dodgson published "Alice in Wonderland" under the pen name... Translated into 170 languages, Carroll’s Alice books, including "Through the Looking Glass," inspired creative dynamos ranging from John Lennon and James Joyce to Walt Disney and Monte Python. Alice’s frustrations and triumphs, in their own way, express what it feels like to go abroad as a modern traveler. Carroll taught math at Oxford’s Christ Church College where Alice Liddell was the daughter of his boss, the dean. Every July 4th, as we set off fireworks to celebrate independence from Britain, Brits gather in Oxford to celebrate Alice Day with a Mad Hatter’s tea party and other festivities. It all revolves around Alice’s Shop across from the college where the real Alice bought her sweets. Now it’s a place to book Alice tours of Oxford town. Alice is being celebrated throughout Britain, the U. S. and around the world to mark 150 years of the book. Alice the traveler must, said the King of Hearts, “Begin at the beginning. ” That’s what Alice did and in so doing she went far beyond the bounds of logic and sense. Wonderland’s mélange of logic and illogic, exotic and mundane, is exactly what makes her travels so modern. “Either the well was very deep or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time to look about her, and to wonder what was going to happen next. I remember this feeling as a customs official in Sydney went through my luggage as my head sagged after flying in from New York. The classic Victorian seaside resort of the St. Tudno Hotel in Llandudno, Wales still serves a High Tea just like the one it served to Carroll and young Alice when they met in 1861 over tea in the hotel. At the Sanderson Hotel in London, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party hides menus inside vintage books and napkins include riddles, while teapots are adorned with kings and queens and sandwich plates with birdcages and carousels and ticking clocks contain... You can chase the White Rabbit all across London this year with Alice shows and exhibits at the Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood and The British Library. In northern England, you can spot the sculpted cat on the wall of St. Wilfred’s Church in the village of Grappenhall that inspired the Cheshire Cat. In nearby, Chester, the Oddfellows Bar and Hotel, has its own Alice themed dining room, complete with upside-down furnishings hanging from the ceiling. Beginning in October, the Belmond Northern Belle will run an Alice themed journey from Chester. The carriages will be decorated to suggest a Mad Hatter’s tea party. The North Yorkshire town of Whitby has a White Rabbit Trail that visits some of Carroll’s haunts, including The Walrus and the Carpenter Café, which sits on the beachfront where Carroll entertained children with his stories. You can even stay at La Rosa Hotel as Carroll did several times. Carroll will be celebrated in Japan, Brazil, Canada and the U. S. where New York will be the American center for a host of commemorations on this side of the pond. You can visit the Lewis Carroll Society of North America website to investigate global, national and local events centered on the celebration. In our time when culture and science are often at odds, Carroll presents a very interesting figure. He was a master of the language of science (math) and the English language. On top of that he knew how to speak to children and adults, showing us all the math inside of poetry and the poetry inside of math. Source: www.travelpulse.com
