Catch up on all the previous chapters here . Previously in Alby:. Alby agreed to perform a traditional Monarchy harvest ceremony to give the people confidence in the new government. However, she has avoided using her powers for over four months now, and this will mean using them once again. Alby accepted the mark of the gods—manifested as purple hair—and became the new Queen. However, both the creepy, ancient Eve and the late Queen Sparkler said that this means she will continue the magic line—“by your line we shall finally be reborn. ” The new queenhood is a complicated thing for Alby to accept. Fanatics of the new Queen have dyed their hair, and proclaim her greatness in the streets. The people were obsessed with the last Child of Mankand, and the current one becoming Queen hasn’t diminished that obsession. Levon helped Alby regain the memories she sacrificed of her mother, and Alby was grateful to regain this piece of herself. However, Levon objected to her accepting her Queenhood, seeing the horror that was created to make it continue and what it does to people. The disagreement has formed a rift between them—they haven’t seen each other in months. CHAPTER 97. The music buzzed tinny through the headphones as I walked the castle grounds. I had been playing the tape my mother made plenty as of late, though I could never find it in me to go beyond the first song. The tape was wearing thin, slight distortions hiding words, but I knew them well by now. In the distance, the workers were preparing the stage for tomorrow’s ceremony. With my hood up, no one noticed me watching—they were expecting a Queen in Queen’s clothes, whereas I had taken to wearing my cloak and the clothes I brought from Earth. What was probaly once a lush green space for public ceremonies was overgrown and weedy after years of disuse, so there was plenty to do—a stage was being built, tall grasses mowed down, strings of lights strung up, and harvest decorations of... I tried to imagine the field full of people—how many would there be. How many eyes, how many voices, how many hands reaching out to me. There would be too many to count. I felt dizzy. What if something goes wrong. It had been months since I had tried any magic. I can’t say these months had been easy. It was like there were hidden muscles strained inside me, some pressure mounting that could never release, but at least I was in control. My goals had changed. There wasn’t any enemy to face, no battle to win—my conflict was strictly internal now. It didn’t feel like there was any winning now, no triumph. Tomorrow, I would finally have to perform magic, make my first act as Queen. For every good outcome I could imagine, it was quickly supplanted by other fantasies, nightmare scenarios playing to my fears—failure, the crowd turning on me, losing control …. Maybe it was time I practiced. The depths of it reached so low, dungeons and storerooms and secrets chambers built for purposes long forgotten. Yet, in all the castle, most of the time I found myself drawn to a single room. There was something about the Calling Chamber and the Summoning Fons it contained that acted like a beacon to my wandering mind. I sat against the wall, placing a teapot on the ground ahead—practicing on anything else simply felt wrong by this point. I held my hands in front of me as though they were someone else’s. The missing finger no longer surprised me with its absence, though most days I thought I could still feel it. It was cold. This is nothing you haven’t done before, I tried to motivate myself, you can do this. I pressed my hands against the air, clearing my mind. The magic forms were all around, all I had to do was direct them. Static began to glow at my palm, but my focus was stolen. Ahead, the dull metal of the teapot began to rise. The famine was broken—my curse stirred inside, groggy from its long nap. It’s hard to say exactly what changed after I became Queen. Obviously my hair was the most visible, but there were subtler changes. I felt it the night I faced Sparkler, and I felt it now, too: the magic came too easily. Source: SparkLife
